Overview
The course on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) is designed to introduce students to the rich intellectual, scientific, philosophical, literary, and artistic heritage of India. It explores the evolution of the Bharatiya Gyan Parampara and highlights how ancient Indian wisdom contributed to education, science, governance, culture, and human development. The course aims to create awareness about India’s traditional systems of knowledge and their relevance in contemporary society.
The course begins with the foundations and history of Indian knowledge systems, including the nature, philosophy, epistemology, and classification of knowledge in ancient India. Students will study the development of Indian thought traditions and the holistic worldview embedded in Indian civilization.
It further examines ancient scriptures such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and Smritis, along with the ancient Gurukul education system and its methods of learning, discipline, and value-based education. The scientific dimensions of IKS are explored through subjects such as astronomy, architecture, Ayurveda, agriculture, metallurgy, mathematics, martial arts, and environmental sciences, showcasing India’s remarkable contributions to global knowledge.

Arjun Singh Thakur is a dedicated scholar specializing in Sanskrit Sahitya and Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). He completed his studies in Sanskrit Literature from Central Sanskrit University and earned the prestigious Acharya (M.A.) degree. He has also qualified the UGC-NET examination in Sanskrit Traditional Subjects and Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), reflecting his strong academic foundation and research aptitude.
He has contributed significantly to the promotion and dissemination of Indian Knowledge Systems through his work at the Centre for Indic Studies, where he was recognized for his expertise in exploring ancient Indian wisdom, philosophy, history, and multidisciplinary Indic traditions. His academic interests include Hindu Darshanas, Dharmashastras, and Indic Arts & Aesthetics traditions.
Known for connecting traditional Indian knowledge with contemporary perspectives, he possesses excellent proficiency in Hindi, English, and Sanskrit. Through his scholarly pursuits, he continues to contribute toward preserving and revitalizing the rich intellectual and cultural heritage of India.
